ARISTOTLE of STAGEIRA. THE GREAT PHILOSOPHER
Aristotle was one of the leading philosophers and scientist of the classical era. He was born at 384 BC in Stageira and died at 322 BC in Chalkida. We honor our great fellow countryman by giving his name in the Cultural Centre.

THE BYZANTINE TOWN OF SIDIROKAFSIA
In the are of today's (new) Stageira, during the Byzantine time, there was the town of Sidirokafsia. It was a thriving mining centre, with a mint, market, inns, public baths etc. More than 6,000 people were working in the mines of the area, with 600 furnaces around the mountain.
STAGEIRA, THE HOME OF ARISTOTLE
Stageira in Chalkidiki, where the philosopher Aristotle was born, were established in 655 BC, by Ionias from Andros and Chalcidians. They were destroyed by the king Philip II of Macedon in 348 BC, who re-established it few years later in honor of Aristotle, teacher of his son, Alexander.
MOUNT STRATONIKON
Mount Stratonikon (GR1270005), altitude 912m, has an excellent natural environment and it is integrated in the European network NATURA 2000. It is an important area because of its dense forests which appear in many vegetation types. It occupies approximately 100 thousand acres.
